Why My Generated Image Looks Different Than I Expected

Image Generation

Overview

AI image generation is a creative process, not a precise one. The results depend heavily on how your shot is described — the subject, setting, lighting, angle, and mood all shape what gets generated. Sometimes a result misses the mark because the description is ambiguous; other times the model just interprets things differently than you imagined.

This is completely normal, and it doesn't mean something is broken.

Why Images Look Unexpected

  • Vague descriptions — "a man in a room" gives the AI very little to work with. More specific language ("a middle-aged detective in a dimly lit interrogation room, close-up, anxious expression") produces much closer results.

  • Missing context — the AI doesn't know your script's overall tone or visual style unless you tell it. Add mood words like "cinematic," "gritty," or "warm and nostalgic" to steer the style.

  • Genre cues — if you're shooting horror, say so in the description. The model responds to genre keywords.

  • Abstract or emotional shots — AI struggles more with scenes that are conceptual or subtle rather than visually concrete.

Tips

  • Regenerate the image 2–3 times with the same description — you'll often get meaningfully different results.

  • Edit the shot description to add more detail, then regenerate.

  • Add a reference image to anchor the visual style — this significantly improves consistency. See: How to Upload Reference Images Instead of Generating

  • Remember that generated images are reference material, not final product. A rough approximation that captures the right mood is more useful than nothing. You can annotate printouts, add handwritten notes, or sketch over them.
